The Journey of Jolly Children Education Centre

Jolly Children Education Centre (JCEC) was established in May 2006 in Bika, Masuliita, Wakiso District, Uganda. What makes our story unique is that the school was never part of an original business plan or educational project. Instead, it was born out of compassion, community need, and a desire to make a difference in the lives of children.
The founder, Dr. Jolly, had purchased land in Masuliita primarily for gardening, which had always been her passion. As she employed members of the local community to work on the farm, many mothers came to work accompanied by their children. Among them were school-age children who, instead of attending classes, spent their days around the gardens.
Concerned by what she observed, Dr. Jolly began asking parents why their children were not in school. The answer revealed a significant challenge facing the community. The nearest school was located more than five kilometres away, and between the village and the school was a swamp that frequently flooded during the rainy season, making it difficult and often dangerous for young children to cross.
The community appealed to Dr. Jolly for help. As a child care specialist with years of experience advocating for children’s welfare, she understood the long-term consequences of denying children access to education. Although she had never planned to establish a school and did not consider herself an educationist, she felt compelled to respond.
For many years, she had experienced recurring dreams and inspirations about helping vulnerable children through education. One particular dream became impossible to ignore. In the dream, she saw children joyfully playing on her property while wearing green school uniforms. Knowing that green was not a colour she would naturally choose, she believed the vision carried a purpose greater than her own preferences.
The following morning, she mobilized her staff, consulted community leaders, and called parents together for a meeting. The response was overwhelming. Local leaders embraced the idea, parents pledged their support, and qualified teachers within the community volunteered to help. A school committee was established, and plans for the school’s opening immediately began.
The school officially opened during the second term of 2006 with only twenty-two pupils. The founder’s farmhouse was converted into the first classrooms, while a grass-thatched prayer cottage served as additional learning space. Despite limited resources, the determination of the community ensured that learning began without delay.
Parents worked tirelessly to make bricks and lay foundations for permanent structures. By the end of the first year, the school’s first classroom block had been completed. As the school’s reputation grew, friends, supporters, and well-wishers from Uganda and abroad contributed resources to support further development.
Within just three years, Jolly Children Education Centre had expanded significantly. The school grew to include seven classrooms, an administration block, a library, a kitchen, dining facilities, and a health unit that served not only the school but also the wider community.
The original farmhouse later became home to Queen Esther Palace, a child care and rescue centre for vulnerable children. Through Dr. Jolly’s charitable organization, Action For Children (Uganda), many abandoned, neglected, and orphaned children found safety, care, and hope. Inspired by the Biblical story of Queen Esther, Dr. Jolly believed that every child, regardless of their circumstances, possessed the potential to achieve greatness.
Over the years, JCEC has educated and mentored hundreds of children. Many former pupils have gone on to become accountants, engineers, mechanics, fashion designers, hairdressers, plumbers, welders, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. Their achievements stand as a testament to the power of education and the unwavering commitment of the school to transforming lives.
Today, Jolly Children Education Centre remains committed to its founding vision of providing quality education, nurturing character, and creating opportunities for children to realize their full potential. From humble beginnings in a farmhouse classroom, JCEC has become a respected institution and a source of hope for generations of learners and families.
